There are moments on a wedding day that you know you will remember forever, in real time, as they’re happening.

For James, I think one of those moments happened in the middle of the ceremony.

He told Melissa afterward that he wanted to remember the way she looked at him forever. She was standing there in her wedding dress, smiling at him, with the sun shining through the trees behind her. And somehow, the trees seemed to know exactly where she was. There was just enough space between the branches for the sunlight to pour through and make her glow.

I love that this was the moment James wanted to hold onto. Not the grand entrance. Not the flowers (even though I need to mention that Melissa grew most of these and her and her bridal crew assembled all of the arrangements…like wow!) or the beautiful details or the celebration waiting for them after the ceremony. Just her. Standing across from him, smiling at him in the middle of the trees, with the sunlight falling exactly where it needed to.

I was sure to let him know…I saw it too, and I got the shot!!!

He said it was going to be his new screensaver. On every device. Because their wedding was never really about putting on a beautiful day. It was about the people standing around them, the love that had carried them to this moment, and the kind of marriage they were stepping into together.

James and Melissa,

I hope you know how special it was to be there.

Not just to photograph your wedding, but to witness the kind of love that surrounds you. To watch your families pray over you. To watch the generations before you hold each other’s hands. To hear James talk about the way the light found Melissa in the trees and know that, even in the middle of everything happening that day, he was paying attention to her.

And somehow, in a room full of people who had every reason to be focused on you, you both kept checking on me, too. Making sure I had water. Making sure I had eaten. Making sure I was okay.

That says so much about who you are.

I hope you build a marriage that feels like that day felt. Full of people who show up. Full of hands reaching out to pray over you. Full of laughter and care and generations of love sitting beside you. And I hope that years from now, when you look back on your wedding day, you remember more than what it looked like.

I hope you remember exactly how it felt.

And James, I hope you never forget the way the sun found her that day.

Because I don’t think I’ll ever forget it either.
